Clearing the haze around the GDPR maze

Protecture held its first GDPR-focused seminars on 20th October 2016, with over 50 delegates hearing from guest speakers from the Fundraising Regulator (CEO Stephen Dunmore and Head of Policy Gerald Oppenheim) as well as Gary Shipsey, Managing Director of Protecture.

Stephen, Gerald and Gary outlined a number of key messages:

  • The new Information Commission is clear – the GDPR is coming in May 2018.
  • Now is the time to review your compliance with the current Data Protection Act and best practice to ensure the transition to the new regulatory regime is as smooth as possible.
  • The ICO’s 12 steps are a useful way to start the process.
  • Consent is key to the future of fundraising.
  • Now is the time to review your methods of seeking consent, and the quality of consent your organisation currently holds.
  • There is likely to be further regulatory action soon from the Information Commissioner’s Office focusing on charities and consent – meaning scrutiny of the sector will intensify once again.

Delegates had many questions regarding the GDPR, unambiguous consent and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). The session highlighted the varying levels of understanding within the sector on how to prepare for the recommended changes in consent, and the GDPR.

The seminar was received with positive feedback, with 97% of delegates likely, or very likely, to recommend the event to others.
